Welcome at FAU. To help you get settled in Erlangen in Jürnberg, we want to give you

information on living in Germany and studying at FAU. On this slide you can get an overview

about the content of this presentation. Let us start with getting around.

FAU is not a campus university but spread over several cities. Most institutions are

located in Erlangen. Classes from the School of Business, Economics and Society take place

in Jürgenberg. But we are also present all over the region as you can see on the map.

You can move between the cities easiest by the public transport provider VGN. Within

the cities most students simply get around by bicycle. To use buses, trains, the subway

and the tram you can use your semester ticket. The ticket is valid for the entire semester

and throughout the VGN region as shown on the map. You can activate your basic ticket and

purchase your additional ticket in the VGN online shop. In the PDF version of this presentation

we provide you with the direct link to the VGN website.

The semester ticket is not fully included in your semester fee. Only the basic ticket

is covered. With the basic ticket you can use public transportation fully on weekends

and holidays but from Monday to Friday it is not valid between 6am and 7pm. To use the

semester ticket during the periods not covered by the basic ticket you need to purchase the

additional ticket. If you want to travel between cities regularly we highly recommend you to

buy the additional ticket as it is way cheaper than any other tickets offered by VGN. In

the table the different colours mark the time slot you can use each ticket. In Germany traffic

rules are very strict. They apply for cyclists too. Please inform yourself in the brochure

Cycling safely in Erlangen about traffic regulations. You can download the PDF of the brochure by

clicking on the links they are provided in your PDF version of this presentation. To

buy a bike you can use online platforms or traditional bicycle shops. The city of Erlangen

hosts bicycle auctions where you can get a good deal. When you start at a new university

there are several things to know. We will give you a short overview about the organisational

aspects concerning your studies at FAU. FAU uses several online platforms. The IDM system

is the entry point for all of these platforms. There is a video available to guide you through

the IDM activation. Mein Campus is the virtual counterpart to the student records office

and the examination office. You will use it to register for courses and exams. It also

provides several documents for you including your certificate of enrolment and your transcript

of records. UniVis is the university information system and electronic course catalogue. You

can also find contact details of all FAU staff there. Stuttun is the platform for online

learning and course management, meaning teachers will provide study materials here. FAU will

automatically assign you an email address. You can access it via FAU mail. To forward

your FAU emails to your private email account you can set up email forwarding in the IDM

system. FAU offers its students to use a cloud storage system, the FAU box. After your registration

in IDM you will receive your FAU card via regular mail. It is a multifunctional smart

card combining the purposes of an electronic student ID, library card and key card. With

the FAU card you can also pay cashless at student restaurants, vending machines in the

university and for printing and copying. You need to validate the FAU card each semester,

there are several machines spread all over the university. FAU has a huge library you

are free to use. To borrow books you can browse the catalogue OPAC and check out books by

using the university library ID on your FAU card. But first you need to accept the terms

of use in your IDM account. For questions please contact the university library info

desk. You can also check out e-tutorials on YouTube. FAU is using the European Credit

Transfer System. One ECTS point should equal 30 work hours. In the German grading system

the highest grade you can obtain is a 1.0. The table shows you the grading scale. ECTS

is designed to make it easier for students to move between countries and to have their

academic qualifications and study periods abroad recognised. Clarify with your home

university how many ECTS credits you have to achieve. ECTS credits cannot be adapted
